I AM NOT A MALAYSIAN CITIZEN BUT A WOMAN MARRIED TO A MALAYSIAN CITIZEN. CAN I REGISTER TO BE A MALAYSIAN CITIZEN AND HOW ?

If you are a woman married to a husband who is a Malaysian citizen and that

  • the marriage was subsisting and
  • the husband is a Malaysian citizen at the beginning of October 1962

or if you satisfied the government that

  • you have resided in Malaysia throughout the 2 years preceding the date of application and intend to do so permanently (permanent resident of Malaysia for at least 2 years) and
  • you are of good character

you are entitled upon making application to the Federal Government, to be registered as a citizen.

Your marriage must be registered in accordance with any written law in force in Malaysia.

To apply to become a Malaysian citizen, you have to apply by submitting Form A which can be obtained from the counter at Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara or National Registration Department.

Your application in Form A must be accompanied by the following documents :

  • Identity card of applicant and spouse
  • Marriage certificate (registered in Malaysia)
  • Birth or citizenship certificate of spouse
  • Entry permit of applicant
  • Travel document owned by applicant and spouse in the last 5 years
  • Identity card of parents and sibling (brothers or sisters)
  • Children birth certificate
  • 3 photographs of applicant
  • 1 photograph of spouse
  • RM$10.00 application fee

Your application will not be accepted unless it is presented at the National Registration Department office by you, the applicant in person who shall be required to sign the application in the presence of a Registrar of Citizens.

Once your application is approved, you'll have to pay a fee of RM$300.00 for the issue of a certificate of citizenship.
